Comparative Genomics: International Workshop, RECOMB-CG 2010, Ottawa, Canada, October 9-11, 2010, Proceedings (Lecture Notes in Computer Science / Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics) Feature

This book constitutes the proceedings of the 8th RECOMB International Satellite Workshop on Comparative Genomics, RECOMB-CG 2010, Ottawa, Canada, in October 2010. This workshop is devoted to bringing together scientists working on all aspects of comparative genomics, from computer scientists, mathematicians and statisticians working on novel computational approaches for genome analysis and comparison, to biologists applying these computational tools to study the structure and the evolution of prokaryotic and eukaryotic genomes. The 24 papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 35 submissions. The papers enrich the combinatorics of genome rearrangements, while gene order phylogenies are getting more and more accurate, thanks to a mixing of combinatorial and statistical principles, associated with rapid and thoughtful heuristics. Several papers tend to refine the models of genome evolution, and more and more genomic events can be modelized, from single nucleotide substitutions in whole genome alignments to large structural mutations or horizontal gene transfers.

Crystal Engineering: From Molecules and Crystals to Materials (NATO Science Series C: (closed)) Feature

Crystal engineering is an interdisciplinary area that cuts across the traditional subdivisions of chemistry. Fuelled by our increasingly precise understanding of the chemistry and properties of supramolecular systems, interest in the potential of the field has increased rapidly. The topics discussed in the 28 contributions in this book provide a state-of-the-art description of the field and offer new research ideas that, if pursued, will serve to strengthen the field at the interface between supramolecular chemistry and materials science.

Living with the Earth: Concepts in Environmental Health Science, Second Edition Feature

Still a revolutionary concept, this Web-enhanced book Living with the Earth: Concepts in Environmental Health Science, Second Edition continues the standard of excellence that earned the first edition the CHOICE award for Outstanding Academic Book in 1999. It incorporates traditional concepts in environmental and health science with new, emerging, and controversial issues associated with environmental threats to human health and ecology. In addition, the Web site, maintained by the author, gives you a technological edge.

HERE'S WHAT YOU GET IN TEXT:

  • Accurate infographic illustrations such as 3-D bar charts, 3-D pie charts, and detailed maps
  • Tables designed using the most recently available data

    HERE'S THE WEB ADVANTAGE:
  • Words from the World with comments and information from students and professionals around the globe
  • Live chatroom with the author during the semester
  • Test bank and study questions giving a thorough understanding of the concepts covered
  • Microsoft PowerPoint presentation slides in digital format
  • Study guides for each chapter with detailed notes, full-color figures, and tables of importance
  • Printable sample questions and answers in a separate location for each chapter
  • Search tools for online journals and databases covering useful, up-to-date information in health and environmental topics
  • News flashes relating to current topics in every chapter

The author presents a balanced and objective picture of opposing scientific views on major issues ranging from global warming and the Greenhouse Effect to reproductive problems associated with endocrine disruptors. More than 280 richly detailed graphs, charts, figures, and photographs put the information right at your fingertips. The glossary provides over 300 definitions and a section on acronyms and abbreviations. Kept current via the author's Web site, this is a "living" environmental health book, reflecting the latest information. The Web site is classroom tested, and designed to maximize the use of the Living with the Earth as a text, training tool, or resource for professionals.
