Geophysical Applications of Artificial Neural Networks and Fuzzy Logic (Modern Approaches in Geophysics)
Geophysical Applications of Artificial Neural Networks and Fuzzy Logic (Modern Approaches in Geophysics) Review
Geophysical Applications of Artificial Neural Networks and Fuzzy Logic (Modern Approaches in Geophysics) Feature
This book is the first major text to encompass the wide diversity of geophysical applications of artificial neural networks (ANNs) and fuzzy logic (FZ). Each chapter, written by internationally-renowned experts in their field, represents a specific geophysical application, ranging from first-break picking and trace editing encountered in seismic exploration, through well-log lithology determination, to electromagnetic exploration and earthquake seismology. The book offers a well-balanced division of contributions from industry and academia, and includes a comprehensive, up-to-date bibliography covering all major publications in geophysical applications of ANNs and FZ. A special feature of this volume is the preface written by Professor Fred Aminzadeh, eminent authority in the field of artificial intelligence and geophysics. The enclosed CD-ROM contains full colour figures and searchable files, as well as short biographies of the editors.

Global Optimization Methods in Geophysical Inversion (Advances in Exploration Geophysics)
Global Optimization Methods in Geophysical Inversion (Advances in Exploration Geophysics) Review
Global Optimization Methods in Geophysical Inversion (Advances in Exploration Geophysics) Feature
One of the major goals of geophysical inversion is to find earth models that explain the geophysical observations. Thus the branch of mathematics known as optimization has found significant use in many geophysical applications.
Both local and global optimization methods are used in the estimation of material properties from geophysical data. As the title of the book suggests, the aim of this book is to describe the application of several recently developed global optimization methods to geophysical problems.
• The well known linear and gradient based optimization methods have been summarized in order to explain their advantages and limitations
• The theory of simulated annealing and genetic algorithms have been described in sufficient detail for the readers to understand the underlying fundamental principles upon which these algorithms are based
• The algorithms have been described using simple flow charts (the algorithms are general and can be applied to a wide variety of problems
Students, researchers and practitioners will be able to design practical algorithms to solve their specific geophysical inversion problems. The book is virtually self-contained so that there are no prerequisites, except for a fundamental mathematical background that includes a basic understanding of linear algebra and calculus.

Electromagnetic Sounding of the Earth's Interior, Volume 40 (Methods in Geochemistry and Geophysics)
Electromagnetic Sounding of the Earth's Interior, Volume 40 (Methods in Geochemistry and Geophysics) Review
Electromagnetic Sounding of the Earth's Interior, Volume 40 (Methods in Geochemistry and Geophysics) Feature
Based on lectures given in the First Russian School-Seminar on electromagnetic soundings of the Earth held in Moscow on 15th November, 2003, this book acquaints scientists and technologists with the latest achievements in theory, techniques and practical applications of the methods of electromagnetic sounding. This three part text covers the methods considered for Earth electromagnetic sounding on a global, regional, and local scale; modern methods for solving forward and inverse problems of geoelectrics, particularily contemporary approaches to the EM data modeling and interpretation in the class of three-dimensional models; and the results of regional EM on-land and sea soundings
* Presents theoretical and methodological findings, as well as examples of applications of recently developed algorithms and software in solving practical problems
* Describes the practical importance of electromagnetic data through enabling discussions on a construction of a closed technological cycle, processing, analysis and three-dimensional interpretation
* Updates current findings in the field, especially with MT, magnetovariational and seismo-electriccal methods and the practice of 3D interpretaions
