The text has been completely re-written and very much expanded, incorporating the advances in knowledge and understanding arising from the new and improved techniques for the study of minerals that have developed.

Each chapter is headed by a brief tabulation of mineral data and sketches showing optical orientation, and ends with full references. Diagrams of crystal structures are presented and followed by discussion of the structural features, making use of data from various spectroscopic as well as diffraction methods. The chemical sections include many analyses from which structural formulae have been calculated.

This book is a standard reference work for professionals in mineralogy, petrology and geochemistry, as well as having a wide appeal as a reference work for postgraduate research students and research workers in these and related fields.

The highly chromatic music of the late 1800s and early 1900s includes some of the best-known works by Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, Cesar Franck, and Hugo Wolf. Yet until now, the harmonic complexity of this repertory has resisted the analytic techniques available to music theorists and historians. In this book, Daniel Harrison builds on nineteenth-century music theory to provide an original and illuminating method for analyzing chromatic music.

One of Harrison's central innovations is his reconstruction of the notion of harmony. Harrison understands harmonic power to flow not from chords as such but from the constituents of chords, reckoned for the most part as scale degrees of a key. This insight proves especially useful in analyzing the unusual progressions and key relations that characterize chromatic music.

Complementing the theoretical ideas is a critical history of nineteenth-century German harmonic theory in which Harrison traces the development of Hugo Riemann's ideas on dualism and harmonic function and examines aspects of Riemannian theory in the work of later theorists. This book constitutes the proceedings of the 8th RECOMB International Satellite Workshop on Comparative Genomics, RECOMB-CG 2010, Ottawa, Canada, in October 2010. This workshop is devoted to bringing together scientists working on all aspects of comparative genomics, from computer scientists, mathematicians and statisticians working on novel computational approaches for genome analysis and comparison, to biologists applying these computational tools to study the structure and the evolution of prokaryotic and eukaryotic genomes. The 24 papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 35 submissions. The papers enrich the combinatorics of genome rearrangements, while gene order phylogenies are getting more and more accurate, thanks to a mixing of combinatorial and statistical principles, associated with rapid and thoughtful heuristics. Several papers tend to refine the models of genome evolution, and more and more genomic events can be modelized, from single nucleotide substitutions in whole genome alignments to large structural mutations or horizontal gene transfers.
